Debuting in 1997, the Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid car to hit the market. Although Toyota initially lost money on the Prius, it has since received a myriad of accolades and awards, including North American Car of the Year in 2004 and recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the most fuel-efficient car in the U.S. in 2008.

The second generation Prius, which came onto market in 2003, was a vast improvement over the first generation. Toyota increased the Prius’ MPG from 42 MPG city/ 41 MPG highway to 48 MPG city/ 45 MPG highway; increased both the Prius’ size and maximum speed; and presented optional features such as cruise control, side airbags, and a navigation system.
